A, an, and the: Three Articles that modify a noun.
There are two types of articles- Indefinite articles and Definite articles.
Indefinite articles -‘A’ and ‘An’ are used to refer to nouns but not a specific noun. It can be any noun or group of nouns.’ A’ is placed before a word starting with a consonant.
A ball
A cup
A table
‘An’ is placed before a word starting with any one of the five vowels that are (a, e, i, o, u).
An apple
An eagle
An Igloo
An orange
An umbrella
Exceptions
If the noun after the article begins with a vowel sound, “an” is placed before a noun.
The vowel sound is created by vowels ‘a, e, i, o, u’ and sometimes ‘an’ is placed before ‘h’ if it is silent. For example:
An hour
An honour
An honest
An heir
If a noun starts with a consonant then ‘a’ is placed before a noun. If a noun starts with a vowel but makes a consonant sound then ‘a’ is placed before the noun. If a noun makes a ‘y’ sound then “a” is placed before the noun.
A University
A Unicorn
A uniform
A unique
Definite Articles-‘The’ is a definite article used to refer to a specific noun or group of nouns. For example:
The dog is in my garden
The car is in my garage
The breakfast is on the table
